Welcome To San Antonio The Microscopy Society of America, the Microbeam Analysis Society, the International Metallographic Society and the Congress of InterAmerican Societies of Electron Microscopy invite you to Microscopy & Microanalysis 2003, which is also the VII InterAmerican Congress on Electron Microscopy/VII Congreso InterAmericano de Microscopia Electronica. The city of San Antonio with its location, history and culture is an ideal host for this Pan American meeting. The Convention Center and the participating hotels are located downtown on the amazing River Walk. Many restaurants and shops are clustered around the River Walk as is La Villita, an arts village and a National Register Historical District. A few blocks from the River Walk is Market Square, which is a center of the Mexican culture featuring patio restaurants, a farmers market and El Mercado, the largest Mexican marketplace outside of Mexico. You will find that downtown San Antonio is a very convenient, interesting and unique venue for our meeting. As a native and resident of Minnesota, I see San Antonio, not through the eyes of a local but through the eyes of a visitor and it's a remarkable, fun city. I, however, can only recommend four Mexican or TexMex restaurants - but then I've only eaten at four, so far.
Ev Osten Dear Colleagues, Microscopy and Microanalysis 2003 will be very special. M&M 2003 incorporates the Seventh Inter- American Congress on Electron Microscopy. This is the first time that the InterAmerican Congress has been held in the United States. It has previously been held in Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico and Venezuela. Therefore, M&M 2003 is hosted by CIASEM - the Committee of InterAmerican Societies of Electron Microscopy - as well as by the Microscopy Society of America (MSA), by the Microbeam Analysis Society (MAS), and by the International Metallographic Society (IMS). CIASEM is the umbrella organization that serves the microscopy communities throughout the Western Hemisphere. The United States is included, since MSA is a member of CIASEM. So, in addition to the splendid symposia and other exciting events of the Microscopy and Microanalysis meeting, there will be a CIASEM opening ceremony, CIASEM Assembly and, most importantly, a CIASEM Fiesta - a Latin American style party. El proximo congreso Microscopy and Microanalysis tendra un caracter muy especial. M&M 2003 es el Septimo Congreso Inter-Americano de Microscopia Electronica y es la primera vez que este evento se realiza en Los Estados Unidos. Las ediciones anteriores fueron realizadas en Venezuela (dos veces), Brasil, Ecuador y Mexico (dos veces). M&M 2003 en San Antonio, Texas, tendra como anfitriones el CIASEM - Comite Inter.-Americano de Sociedades de Microscopia Electronica - y las sociedades Microscopy Society of America (MSA), Microbeam Analysis Society (MAS), International Metalographic Society (IMS). El CIASEM y el Congreso Inter-Americano se proponen a servir a toda la comunidad de microscopia en el ambito del Hemisferio Occidental. Evidentemente, Los Estados Unidos estan incluidos porque el MSA es miembro del CIASEM. En este contexto, debemos enfatizar que, ademas del excelente programa tecnico cientifico en los diferentes simposios y en otros eventos que se realizan durante el congreso Microscopy and Microanalysis 2003, ocurriran sesiones y eventos especiales de interes particular para el CIASEM. Destacamos la ceremonia de apertura, la asamblea y, principalmente, la fiesta Latino-Americana del CIASEM, que seran realizadas durante el congreso.
