Welcome to M&M 2004

Welcome to Savannah!

Dear Microscopy and Microanalysis 2004 Attendees,

We are looking forward to welcoming you to Savannah, a charming old southern town with lots of history and lots of things to do, besides attend the meeting, of course. It is a beautiful city with elegant ante bellum mansions and restored houses, lovely city squares with stately old trees draped in Spanish moss, and fabulous restaurants with gracious service. Savannah was recently voted one of the top 10 cities in the U.S. to visit.

It has numerous interesting museums. One on airplanes (The Mighty Eighth Air Force Heritage Museum) has real planes and an astounding array of flight paraphernalia. One on trains (The Roundhouse Railroad Museum) has old engines and cars in which kids can climb plus a model train room. Another on ships (Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum) contains fantastic huge models (e.g., the Titanic and the Savannah) with intricate detail. There are also art museums, lovely southern gardens, and riverboat rides. See the events list or log onto the Savannah web sites (http://www.savannah-visit.com or http://www.savannahchamber.com) for more details. There are several famous golf courses, as well as nearby beaches, for those of you who want to extend your stay for a family vacation. The city is easily accessed by Interstate 95 or a friendly (not huge) airport. If this were not enough to entice you and you really do want to attend the meeting, the convention center is new and nice. It is located on an island in the Savannah River and can be accessed from the city by a water taxi on the river or a free bus across a spectacular suspension bridge.

The opening reception will take into consideration the numerous comments we've received that folks, for the most part, just want to relax and visit with friends, rather than be blasted with loud music or entertained. There will be entertainment areas and quiet areas plus a delicious southern meal. For those of you who enjoyed the southern hospitality of free peach ice cream at the LAC 2004 booth in San Antonio, that was only a small taste of the treats to enjoy in Savannah! We look forward to seeing you.

Message from the Presidents of the Sponsoring Societies

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the Microscopy Society of America, the Microbeam Analysis Society, and the International Metallographic Society, we invite you to attend Microscopy and Microanalysis 2004 in Savannah, Georgia. The program committee (Ian Anderson, chair, Bob Price, Ernie Hall, Elliot Clark, Paul Kotula, and John-Henry Scott) have been hard at work for over a year polishing what promises to be a spectacular event.

The scientific program includes special biological symposia on development, pathology, microorganisms, and macromolecules. There are physical symposia on nanostructure of molecular assemblies, nanotechnology, magnetic structure, and more. Numerous symposia on advances in instrumentation and techniques will also be held. In addition, the ever-popular workshops will again occur on Sunday.

The local arrangements committee, including Robert Simmons, Janet Woodward, and Sara Miller, plus a host of other players too numerous to mention, have been working on the social events. Our sustaining members and vendors have already pledged their never-ending support, for which we're most grateful. Indeed, it promises to be a great meeting in a lovely venue. See the list of attractions and the nice pictures of the area in this publication, or visit the Savannah web site (http://www.savannah-visit.com/).

The charm and southern hospitality of the city and a great scientific program await you. See you there.

Welcome to Savannah!
