Monday & Tuesday Afternoon Microscopy Workshop
Organizers: MSA Education Committee
|
Beginning with Microscopy and Microanalysis 2007, the Education Committee of The Microscopy Society of America is pleased to announce a new series of workshops that will run on Monday and Tuesday afternoons and evenings during Microscopy and Microanalysis meetings. Lectures will be held between 1:30pm and 3:30pm, and laboratory sessions will be held from 5:30pm to 7:00pm in the Exhibit Hall. These workshops will supplement the traditional pre-meeting Short Courses and in-meeting Tutorials. The initial workshop will focus on a very basic introduction to the subject area in question, although workshops in subsequent years may feature more advanced treatments of a variety of topics. For 2007 there will be one workshop offered as follows:
X-08 Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray energy dispersive spectrometry (XEDS) - The characterization tools for nanotechnology.
Lecturers: David Joy and Nicholas Ritchie
Note:An additional fee applies for this special workshop. Please see registration Forms.
This course of four lectures and two laboratory lecture demonstrations will consist of basic introduc-tions to the scanning electron microscope on Monday afternoon and evening and to XEDS on Tuesday afternoon and evening. Instrument features, operation basics, image and spectral optimization and sample preparation will be discussed in the lectures and demonstrated in the laboratory lecture demonstrations.
The SEM lectures will be presented by David Joy (the University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Laboratory). The XEDS lectures will be presented by Nicholas Ritchie (National Institutes of Standards and Technology). The evening laboratory lecture demonstrations will be performed on a wide variety of SEM and XEDS systems provided by the exhibiting companies present at the meeting. Each participating exhibitor will have one of their applications experts operating the instrument and there will be an expert lecturer-demonstrator drawn from the SEM and XEDS user community to explain each aspect of the demonstration. Enrollment of this workshop is limited to 50 people.

It's a Family Affair!
Organizer: Elaine Humphrey
|
Through the years MSA council members have received many requests from meeting attendees to allow their children the opportunity to participate in the meeting by viewing the exhibits. With the anticipation that many families will be attending the Fort Lauderdale meeting, the councils of the joining societies and the program committee will sponsor a session aimed at children of all ages, including those of us that still consider ourselves children. A keynote speaker will present a number of interesting images, ranging from insects to atoms, that will demonstrate the wide range of science that the imaging technologies represent. Following the presentation, children will have the opportunity to participate in a guided tour of the exhibit floor and to visit some of the exhibitors to view the microscopes and see how they work. Please check the Meeting Expo and Daily Newsletter for the scheduled time of this exciting session designed to pique the scientific interest of children of all ages.
