Summary of the Scientific Program

The M&M 2008 meeting will be preceded on Saturday and Sunday, August 2 and 3, with a Pre-meeting Congress entitled "Cellular Analysis: Linking Quantitation To Structure And Function". The Pre-meeting Congress will share Sunday with full-day Short Courses on image analysis, live cell imaging, environmental SEM, tomography, and failure investigation.

Continued and expanded in 2008 will be a In-Week workshops, to be held on two consecutive afternoons during the meeting. The topics will be Theory and Techniques of Aberration-Corrected Microscopy, and Basic Biological Confocal Microscopy . These workshops are designed to meet the needs of students and technical personnel, and require additional fees, beyond standard registration.

In biological sciences, the scientific program will include topics on: stem cell imaging, ciliopathies, microscopy in development of biomass to biofuels, structural basis of disease, microscopy of infectious disease, impact of biofilms, visualizing biological nanomachines, multi-modal approaches for biomaterials assessment, and microscopy & microanalysis in the pharamceutical sciences.

The topics in the physical sciences will include: understanding the synthesis and properties of nanostructures and nanomaterials, high resolution and analytical characterization of engineered nanostructures, surface micrsocopy and microanalysis in materials and biological systems, ultrafast electorn microscopy and ultrafast science, microbeam analysis of terrestrial and planetary materials, metallographic techniques and materials characterization, image analysis and quantitative microscopy, failure analysis, nuclear and reactive materials.

Joint symposia on technology and instrumentation for both biological and materials scientists will include: microscopy and analysis of soft matter, imaginf cells and tissues in 3D confocal microscopy, visualizing unstained specimens, imaging in fluorescence and flow cytometry, advanced CARS micrscopy in biololgy, hyperspectral imaging, cathodoluminescences, and soft x-ray analysis, tem accessory and intrumentation and automation, teaching microscopy and microanalysis, simluation of microscopy, microanalysis and microscopic phenomena, scanning probe microscopy in physical and biological sciences, FIB based applications and instrumentation advances for the physical and biological sciences, problem solving with light microscopy, advances in electron tomography, problem solving using microanalytical techniques, 40 years of EDS, 21st centery microscopy electrons & He ions, atom probe analysis of non-traditional materials, new analytical techniques in microbeam analysis, advances in cryo-electron microscopy, advances in analytical microscopy for nanoscience, microscopy techniques for ceramics and composites.

In addition to the regular topical symposia, contributed sessions will be organized that encompass fields of study not covered in the topical symposia. In each of the three categories--Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Technology and Instrumentation - a designated organizer, working with the Executive Program Committee, will endeavor to create a coherent set of sessions. This mechanism will allow us to properly showcase every paper that is contributed.

The core of the scientific program is the series of poster sessions. These are held in the afternoon at a time when there are no platform sessions. A poster session is an essential part of each topical and contributed symposium. This is your best opportunity to present and discuss your results one-on-one with your colleagues. The majority of papers are presented in this way, and many authors specify a poster as the preferred presentation method. Although authors need be present at their poster for only one afternoon, they are requested to leave their posters up from Monday through Thursday afternoon, giving ample opportunity for viewing and re-viewing. A poster presentation is an especially good opportunity for students to meet well-known investigators. To encourage this interaction, MSA poster awards are available only to students, and are given in all three topical categories. All poster presenters are eligible for selection as part of the MSA Traveling Poster Exhibit, as well as the Diatome Award that includes a first prize of an all-expenses-paid trip for two to Switzerland, with second and third prizes of Swiss watches. Please review the instructions for award applications on the awards WWW page.

Supplementing the topical sessions will be tutorials that provide the opportunity to learn the basics behind several popular techniques. Topics include: cryo-fluorescence, live cell imaging, electron backscatter diffraction, electron probe microanalysis, lorentz microscopy, stereological characterization of 3D microstructures, ImageJ, and job hunting for scientific professionals. The Technologists forum will feature platform presentations on geology of the southwest USA revealed through microscopy, immunogold labeling, and EM preparation dealing with the nanoworld.

The commercial exhibits by themselves would be reason enough to attend the meeting. Nowhere else can one find such a large array of state-of-the art microscopy instrumentation, services, and supplies. The chance to try out the latest instrumentation, and discuss applications directly with the manufacturers' top experts, is a chance not to be missed! Several of the exhibitors hold special tutorials on the second evening of the meeting, providing an excellent opportunity to appreciate the capabilities and learn about the best operating procedures of the latest instrumentation.

Please review all of the symposium descriptions and determine which are most suitable for presenta-tion of your work. Authors of invited talks and tutorials should select only one number. Authors of con-tributed papers should select both a first and second choice, one of which might be one of the special contributed symposia. The symposium organizers will assemble the papers into coherent sessions. In-clusion in a specific symposium cannot be guaranteed, but every effort will be made to place your contri-bution into the most appropriate symposium. When submitting their papers, authors should indicate if they prefer a poster presentation, and also if the first author is a student. To be eligible for awards, posters must be put up Monday morning. The instructions for submission and guidelines for paper preparation can be found on later WWW pages.

All papers must be submitted by the February 15, 2008 deadline.

Specific details of each of the items outlined above can be found by selecting the appropriate Button on the left hand window of the WWW Site. Click here to see the details of each Symposia.

It is the sincere hope of the Executive Program Committee that the scientific program will be of interest to all microscopists in North America and the world. We look forward to meeting and interacting with as many of you as possible in Albuquerque.

Microscopy and Microanalysis

Microscopy and Microanalysis publishes original research papers dealing with a broad range of topics in microscopy and microanalysis. These include articles describing new techniques or instrumentation and their applications, as well as papers in which established methods of microscopy or microanalysis are applied to important problems in the fields of biology or materials science. Microscopy and microanalysis are defined here in a broad sense, and include all current and developing approaches to the imaging and analysis of microstructure. The criteria for acceptance of manuscripts are the originality and significance of the research, the quality of the microscopy or microanalysis involved, and the interest for our readership.
