Welcome to the Project MICRO Database and Search Engine
|
As you might have guessed one of the benefits of Project
MICRO is an extensive compilation of information about Books, Videos,
CDRoms and WWW sites . This is a valuable information resource
for everyone and organizing it logically and in a easily
accessible format is never trivial.
The original on-line publication of this information was
manually entered and was a nightmare to keep current, having
to be hand edited whenever there was an update.
We have since migrated all of the information
into a Database. This is easier to maintain, and has the added
benefit that it is searchable.
Every entry in the database has been classified and you can
use the provided search engine to extract a WWW page of information
corresponding those entries which pertain to your interests/needs.
To execute a search this you need only to go to the SEARCH ENGINE
and use the form which is reproduced below to specify the information that you want.
You are able to search the database by any combination of the following:
- Category
- Curriculum Guides
- Supplmental Books
- Videos
- CDRoms
- WWW sites
- SubCategory
- Microscopic World
- Optics
- Teaching Microscopy
- The Microscope and
Specimen Preparation
- For the Primary Grades
- Description
- Title
- Year of Publication
- Author's Name
|
|
For example if you are interested in all entries in the DataBase published in the year 1999
simply go to the form type in 1999 into the Year Search Term text box and then click
on the SUBMIT button. The sofware will then extract
the entries from the database for you and format them on
a single WWW page.
Please remember this is NOT a commerical database, nor is it commerical software, but rather
it is custom written for ProjectMICRO. It will likely have faults and
problems and it will evolve with time as new features are added (and problems solved).
Suggestions and Problem reports are welcome just click here to send an Email
message.
Here are a few useful Hints/Tips:
- The search engine is case insensitive, this means MICRO,
micro and MiCrO will all produce the same result.
- The search engine finds every occurance of the phrase you enter. Thus searching the
description field for the term MICRO will list all entries which contain those
5 specific characters in a continuous string. Thus you will find listed ALL records containing the
words "microscope" as well as the words
"microorganism" and "microbe" etc.... So don't be surprized
if you get more than what you were originally looking for. By the way, the search terms are highlighted in red
in the output pages so that you can see where the information you were search for was located.
-
To get a listing of all the entries
for a particular category, for example, a listing of all the Curriculum Guides
simply use the PULL DOWN menu to select the Curriculum Guides option from the CATEGORY
search parameter, then leaving all other parameter fields blank, and click
on the SUBMIT button. A blank entry in a search field tells the software
to search for all possible all values in this field. The result will be a
listing of all the Curriculum Guides.
-
There is a MAXIMUM number of entries that will be displayed
on your screen for any search (50 records). If you for example try to
print out the entire database by searching for everything in every
field you will hit this limit. You should narrow your
search criteria to a specific subset of the database. There
is no limit to the number of searches you can perform, or
how many times you can submit a search.
